IDPA

Sponsored by the Temple Gun Club

If you are new to IDPA, let me take this opportunity to welcome you!  Each month we see several new shooters, and our seasoned shooters are more than happy to extend a hand and explain things as we go.  This is a sport that is designed to simulate real life situations as closely as possible, and it is especially beneficial to those licensed to carry a concealed handgun.  You will learn to use cover and shoot strong hand and weak hand only.  You will get to practice safe gun handling skills and have fun at the same time.  It is my hope that you will get all the information you need on this page to come out and give it a go and have fun.

What do I need?

This is probably the most asked question.  To start with IDPA you will need a strong side holster (no cross draw or small of the back designs), a dual magazine carrier, a basic stock gun, and at least 3 magazines, though you will be better off with 4 or 5 mags.  For details on what types of guns and what modifications you can make, go to www.IDPA.com.   You will also need some sort of concealment that completely conceals your handgun (vest, jacket, unbuttoned shirt, etc).  From the month of May until October, we generally do not require concealment due to the weather, but you will need to bring it in case a specific scenario calls for it.  You will also need hearing and eye protection and its a good idea to have a hat of some sort.

What does it cost?

You are welcome to shoot with us the first time for only the cost of the match fee: $20 however Temple Gun Club members get a $5 discount.  IDPA members get another $5 discount.  If you are a certified IDPA safety officer and you volunteer to S.O. a match, you shoot free.  Once you've shot with us, if you would like to continue, you will need to join the IDPA which you can do at the match for $35 (IDPA annual dues are $40 but if you sign up through the club, you get a $5 discount).

Sign in times for Matches are:

Setup and sign in is 0730 to 0900, safety meeting 0915, and hammer down at 0930. We are usually done by 1 pm.

Where can I get some gear for a great price?

If you are needing to get some gear to start IDPA, or you would like to upgrade from gear that you are currently using, see the links below for GREAT prices and GREAT customer service (based on my experience and others):Gunner's Alley
These guys have a great package deal that includes a Kydex holster and dual mag carrier for $76 + shipping.  The product line is called G-Code, and it is what I use for IDPA and carry.  Ask for Brad or Ed and tell 'em you got the reference from the Temple Gun Club.  These guys have bent over backwards to make sure that I have
been satisfied with my purchases from them, even to the point of calling me at home on the weekends to see how a product worked for me and to see if I had any other needs that could be met.  We do not make any money from the reference, but we would like to see how many folks are sent to them through us.  You cannot go wrong with these guys.

Comp-Tac
Greg is based out of Houston and makes some terrific Kydex gear for IDPA and carry.  His customer service is always top notch and he has quite a variety of designs available.  You will also see a lot of Comp-Tac equipment at IDPA matches.

When is it?

We hold our matches on the first an third Sunday of each month.  We also have a classifier twice per year in April and October.

Where is it?

Click on the button 'Directions' for maps.

How much ammo do I need?

Our matches normally require less than 100 rounds, but it is recommended that you bring 150 rounds just in case you burn through more rounds in a particular scenario or the round count for a match is higher.  If you forget-don't worry.  The folks at the match are happy to share.

Are there any lady shooters?

Yes!  Although not nearly as many as we would like, we welcome any and all female shooters.  Guys-have your wives/girlfriends come out and watch.  That is how my wife got involved.  Each Spring we have a Ladies Shoot Free match to try to get more women involved.

Do I need to bring anything else?

Generally, we recommend a snack, some water, and sun block.

Match results are sent out by email and will be posted on this web site.
